In this video I would like to explore dialog treatment and specifically using reverb on dialog tracks. In a comedy movie, that we recently completed the post production for, called Love's Therapy from Tortuga Studios and directed by Alexandre Reineck, we used 2 different reverbs on the dialog tracks.  

Yes I use two reverbs, the first is an instance of Altiverb from Audio Ease which only goes to the centre channel and this reverb gives me depth.

The second reverb is an instance of Pheonixverb from Exponential Audio and I route this to my LCR buss and I use this for size or 'bigness' and I pan this 20% left and right to give more focus to the sound.  For me pan is very important to you give the 'right' size for the sound and the panning helps to fit the sound round the scene. If you pan the reverb return hard left and right you will have a bigger sound but with less focus, and focus is important for dialog.

Your audience need to know where the sound comes, so as not distract the audience so they and lose the story of the movie and also if you pan too far it will no longer be believable.

I hope you can see how important reverb is to help make the dialog believable. I use it in all the movies I work on, but you need to be careful with the focus to  keep it real.
