Tip - Adding Thickness To Dialog With EQ

Here is another tutorial from Oscar nominated Marcelo Cryo. In this tutorial Marcelo takes a look at how to use a classic EQ trick often used in music but here adapted to use on dialog in film sound post production. Over to you Marcelo....

This trick simulates a lot of great vintage filters and EQs that boost before the cut. I have found it works really well on dialog too, as well as more conventionally in music mixing (like a bass or a kick drums..

With dialog I like to do to give more body to the speech and so I cut around 80Hz, and boost just above the cut, say around 100Hz. Boosting before the cut frequency you can give a lot more body without adding "mud".

In this quick video I am demonstrating the trick using the Eiosis EQ plugin that has a solid low end, but you can use this trick with any EQ you have.
