In this Pro Tools Expert Podcast Extra Interview, James Ivey talks to Mastering Engineer Ian Shepherd about his current work, his website  Production Advice and the 2016 Dynamic Range Day which is coming up on Friday 20th of May 2016.

Ian Shepherd, is  a professional mastering engineer and owner of Mastering Media Ltd, specialising in High Definition audio services, Blu-ray and DVD authoring.

Over the last fifteen years he has worked on literally thousands of CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays for all of the major record labels, TV stations and independents, including several number one singles and award-winning albums.

Artists and clients include: Keane, Tricky, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Deep Purple, The Orb, Leslie Garret, Culture Club, Porcupine Tree, Andy Weatherall, The Las, Ozric Tentacles, Christine Tobin, New Order and King Crimson amongst many others.

Ian is a fierce critic of the so-called “Loudness Wars” and in 2010 I organised the first Dynamic Range Day to raise awareness about the issue.

In this interview we start with Ian's back story and move onto the Mastering Show. Next we explore the key role of a Mastering Engineer, before learning more about the Dynamic Range Day 2016 and the Loudness Wars.

Then Ian shares some tips about some of the most common mistakes that he often has to try to fix in mastering, before exploring the question of is there anything that can't fixed in mastering.

Finally we explore Ian's studio build and acoustic treatment, before discussing Processing on audio tracks and auto-tune to round up the interview.
