IBC 2015: Storage News From G-Technology

A while back we showed how useful the G-Technology G-Dock ev with Thunderbolt was for location recording and studio editing. Well now they have a single bay solution, the G-Dock ev Solo with USB connectivity as well as the original dual bay with Thunderbolt connectivity. In addition for the G Drives they have added a Firewire 800 adaptor for those of us still using computers that don't offer Thunderbolt.

During my visit to the G-Technology stand at IBC 2015, I was very pleased to see a number of new additions to the range that will be very useful for us in the pro-audio sector. As I own a Mac Pro the G-Dock ev dual bay wasn't an option for me, even though it is a really neat solution, because the docking station only has Thunderbolt, and my cheese grater doesn't do Thunderbolt. So it was very pleasing to see that G-Technology are bringing out the G-Dock ev Solo, which is a single bay dock with USB3 on the back. Now I would still need to add a USB 3 card to my Mac Pro but I would get the Sonnet card I saw earlier.

They have also realised that the G-Drive ev drives don't connect to all computers, so they are producing a Firewire 800 adaptor that you can plug onto the back of a G-Drive ev and now means I can plug these drives into computers that have better Firewire than USB support. It is very nice to see an innovative brand like G-Technology add new products that improve legacy support.

They also have a range of trash can form factor RAID systems. You can see from the picture above, they have taken the waste bin (trash can) design and used it to mount a RAID array system right down to the flip up lid. The G-Speed Studio is a 4-bay hardware RAID storage solution that's based around Thunderbolt2 The RAID support is configurable in RAID 0,1,5,6 and 10.

Another new product showing for the first time at IBC 2015 is the G-Speed Studio XL with two ev Series Bay Adapters. It offers a powerful combination of a raid array built around Enterprise drives and the flexibility of two ev slots. These integrated Bay Adapters accommodate any of the ev series drives. You can use these two ev bays to ingest media straight onto the protected RAID when you're back from location.

They have been busy extending the ev range including the G-Drive ev RaW Rugged, G-Drive ev SSD, G-Drive ev 220 and also version that will take the cards RED cameras use - the RED MINI-MAG Reader Edition.
