Audio Software Rental - Good Or Bad For Consumers?

It would seem that there's nothing to get some people hot under the collar than the idea of audio software rental, although conversely some user think it's the best thing since sliced bread.

One comment on social media said this,

"Why when Slate announce it are people so positive but when Avid did the same thing they got universally condemned?"

It's a fair question to ask, why has there been such a different reaction to what looks like the same idea? Was that more about the messenger than the message or both? Or is there are difference between renting a DAW than renting plug-ins?

Is some of the negative reaction simply resistance to a shift in the way we think about the way we get to use software? Is this new concept exposing the reality of what it really means when we exchange money to use software?

We're asking these questions because we are genuinely intrigued as to why this subject seems to create such strong opinions and want to try and understand the real concerns of those who have them.

So, audio software rental...is it good or bad for consumers?

Discuss.
