In our continuing series profiling the companies on our Audio Market page where we offer smaller developers the opportunity to reach the Pro Tools community at a much lower price, we profile DWB Mixing made up of Pete, Greig and our own Paul Drew, who is also deputy editor of our sister site Studio One Expert.

PTE: How did you start?  Tell us about your journey to setting up your company.

Paul: DWB Music Ltd started 10 years ago, I was the in-house producer/ mix engineer working for a record company, Pete was brought on as a songwriter, and Greig was employed to deal with the publishing side of the business.  We became disillusioned with the internal politics and not being able to achieve what we thought we were able to, so after 3 years of working for this record label we decided to go off on our own, and haven’t looked back. 

PTE: Tell us a bit about your company and the products you produce?

Paul: At DWB we started off as a small songwriting/ mixing/ Production/ Publishing company, We have now grown into much larger company who have a large roster of writers and producers who combined have sold over 50 million records all over the world. We were very lucky early on, we wrote and produced a song that was a very big hit in Japan, we have now grown into the biggest British publishing company in Asia. Since then we have achieved chart hits all over the world.

PTE: What challenges are you facing at the moment?

Paul: I think we are facing the same as everyone else in the music industry, and that is dwindling physical sales. The general public don’t feel that music is an art form they they need to pay for anymore. I think the industry will find a way to rectify this, but it will take years. We have friends in Germany and one in particular is a big German music lawyer, who has managed to turn the sale of music around, which now makes Germany one of the great music territories again, but it has taken years. I am hoping that the rest of the world will follow suit.

PTE: What plans do you have for the future that you can share with the community?

Paul: These last few years we have traveled all over the world to secure new territories for our writers/ producers and mixers music catalogue. We are very excited about the emerging markets and after all the traveling, its seems to be paying off. So far this year we have been to the U.S, Japan, Holland, Belgium, Korea, and India, and secured new sub publishers in the emerging territories.

PTE: What is your favourite audio tool (excluding any of your own products)?

Paul: I own a lot of music gear I’m a little obsessed, but my favourite at the moment are my new Amphion One18 monitors. They are super detailed and exciting to mix on.

PTE: What one thing gets you annoyed about the audio business?

Paul: I think there is a lot of great people that like to help out on forums etc, but it seems there is a growing trend of people on forums giving their opinion when they clearly don’t know what they are talking about. This is where the Pro Tools Expert and the other sister Expert sites are so helpful as everyone wants help each other and give great advice.
