I first met Sreejesh Nair at IBC 2015 where he showed me around the Avid S6 and now it works in a Dolby Atmos workflow. Sreejesh Nair is also a blogger with an ethos that knowledge should be shared otherwise nobody grows. To that end he has produced this 87 minute free tutorial video and blog article covering surround mixing in Pro Tools with Dolby Atmos.

So with Sreejesh's permission we are going to share it here. Over to you...

For the first time, I am posting a video blog. The reason for this is because the techniques for Surround Mixing to Picture is not something that is seen or something that one can find very often as a video. The other reason is, until now, Dolby Atmos has mostly been present in literature and not really shown in action with a mix. I wanted to show 4 things:

1. My Mixing Philosophy in relation to Picture

2. Surround Mixing Techniques

3. Basic Dolby Atmos Workflow with the Local Renderer

4. Pro Tools Mixing Techniques.

The song I am using is Chathe by Thaikkudam Bridge. They are an amazing band and one that I personally am a big fan of. Govind Menon, who is the lead composer for the band and the Violinist and Singer, is a very good friend of mine and was very kind enough to offer the tracks and the session for letting me share the techniques of a surround mix. The rights of the song remain with Kappa TV and Mathrubhumi Music. The original mix was done by Rajan KS, Amith Bal and Hemanth K, and Mastered by Farhad Dadyburjor. Something to keep in mind is that this video contains the stereo downmix of the surround one I did. The main idea is the philosophy and technique in such a mix. So, even though I don’t have a way to play the surround for you guys, everything you see in this is done in surround. So, please make sure you hear it with a good set of headphones if possible and also support and like the band's page. Please share this post if you find it useful.
