Sunday Sound Effects Round Up - Surround Sound Lab, Undertone, Boom Library, Chuck Russom FX, Torann Audio, Pro Sound Effects

Surround Sound Lab Release Metal Workshop

SSL15 Metal Workshop Session is a full range of recordings from a metal workshop. All the machines in all the formats and angles. You can choose between the close 416 mono mic, with the full power of the engine, or the surround format recorded 20 meters away.

This library was recorded in a Double MS mic configuration for the surround files. Double M/S” is an improved version of the well-known M/S stereo recording technique. In addition to a front facing cardioid or supercardioid ”mid” microphone and a figure-8 ”side” microphone, a rear-facing directional microphone is set up. The front- and rear-facing microphones share the signal of the figure-8 microphone so as to form two complete, back-to-back M/S systems. One M/S system then provides the three front channels with the centre channel signal being provided directly by the mid microphone of the front system, while the other system provides the two surround channels. An arrangement of this kind allows flexible processing of the stereo surround image width and post-production adjustment for both of the M/S pairs.

The total runtime: 40minutes with 26 Ambiences recorded at 24 bit / 48 kHz. The files have Soundminer and BWAV extended metadata and there are 3 different angles per takeand is priced at 49 Euros.

With 300+ files, and a run time of over an hour and a half, this package covers a wide array of human interactions with liquid and their containers. They used multiple containers, multiple liquids (including beer!), on and off multiple surfaces to ensure a practical and highly useful package.

You can get Sips, Pours & Set-Downs for $75 or Undertone are offering Sips, Pours, & Set-Downs + Cooking & Food Prep for a total of $225! saving $50.

Winter - The Winter Forest is almost like the desert, most of the life has left or gone dormant.  But stay long enough, and like the desert, you will hear life starts to punctuate the stillness.  Pileated Woodpeckers hammering at trees.  Crow calls.  Wind.  Branches creaking. And, yes, even bird songs.

These recordings were initially undertaken for an Animated Feature film, but they are so interesting that the team at Undertone decided to share them with the world.  They braved 3 different frozen locations in the dead of winter.  Many of the recordings have a great frozen stillness to them, but listen long enough and you’ll hear the subtle shifts of the winter world.

Winter has been recorded 24/96 in double-ORTF QUAD an is priced at $65.

The library features 180 positive, neutral and negative audio feedbacks, split into three complementary families. “Clouds” is sleek and silvery, “Earth” is warm and welcoming, and “Bits” is chiptune paradise. There are also a plethora of clicks and buttons – 150, to be exact – split into 50 each of plastic, metal and glass. Slides and whooshes abound with another 50 different sounds to choose from! Rounding out UI-FI are over 20 sounds of pages being turned, crumpled and ripped apart. UI-FI is priced at 33 Euros.

How I Work: Allison Casey of Gramercy Post

On the Pro Sound Effects blog the next of their How I Work series has been published. This edition profiles senior sound designer Allison Casey from Gramercy Post. Allison's recent projects include Barnwood Builders for the DIY Network, North Woods Law for Animal Planet, TLC's Love at First Swipe, commercials for Samsung, Squarespace, and Kohl's as well as movie trailers and featurettes.

In this profile Allison talks about her workflow, gear, inspiration, and how the Pro Sound Effects Hybrid Library has helped facilitate her journey from a freelancer to studio owner. "The Hybrid Library has been great because of the uniformly high quality. Because of the quick turnaround and budget limitations of many of our TV projects, it's helpful to have such wide breadth of go-to sounds and instantly be able to filter to Hybrid effects that I always know will 'just work'." When looking for inspiration in her sound design and editing, Casey has been embracing the physical art of sculpture to inspire a less-is-more approach to her work. "While I haven't ever chiseled anything out of a block of marble, the idea of starting with an undefined chunk of material and having to carve out the unimportant parts to direct attention and define meaning, rather than simply piling on hoping to make something cool, really resonates with me." You can read the full interview on the Pro Sound Effects blog.
