Control Pro Tools Plug-ins With A MIDI Controller & Controllermate Software In Pro Tools 11

Just before Christmas we shared a very interesting video from Brian Daly, the man behind the Hotkey Matrix showing he was able to control plug-in parameters using a Behringer BCR2000 using MIDI.  We have been asking Avid for MIDI learn for ages but Brian has created this excellent work around whilst we wait for Avid to deliver.

Many of you were very interested in how he used Controllermate to make this work and so Brian has created this brilliant tutorial video showing how it is done.

He has also set up an impressive resource with examples and guidance on what features you need from your MIDI Controller and he also includes some example setup files that you can import into Controllermate to help you get started.

As Controllermate is a Mac only application this work round is only going to work for Mac users. It also transpired that this will only work fully in Pro Tools 11 because when you select a plug-in it becomes the active window as Controllermate works on the active window.  Pro Tools 10 works differently and doesn’t make the current plug-in, the active window and so Controllermate works on the active window, which is likely to be the Edit or Mix window.

Because he uses Controllermate to convert endless rotary controllers and buttons MIDI data into mouse scroll wheel or mouse clicks and it works on the relative position within a plug-in window then it doesn’t matter where the plug-in is and what your system is, as far as Pro Tools is concerned it is responding to mouse data, nothing else.
