This a workflow I tend to use quite often. It is kind of a control surface workflow. I always make an aux/buss and a VCA group for each instrument and so on. And then, for example, on the vocals I put the compression on the buss instead of on the audio track. All the other processing that’s done after the compressor will of course be on this buss too.  

But, the whole point of doing this is…  

• When I sit with the control surface, I put the buss and the vca faders right beside each other, and in that way I can easily control the threshold  of the comp by how much I’m putting in with the VCA, and the “make up gain” with the aux/group.
• I find it a lot easier to write automation in this way. It might just be me that uses this workflow and thinks of it in this way, and it might be wrong too, but it works for me.
• I can sit with two fingers and control the dynamics and the volume at the same time.  I also do this for stuff like guitars, basses, pianos and so on.
