Community Tip - Great Drum Sound By Mistake

With the support of iLok, more tips & tricks from the community. Here is one from Jim Ryser….

Discovered completely accidentally, we had an open vocal mic in the main room (a high ceiling hard walled room) and a set of headphones cranked up.  We were recording our drummer on a track and discovered this killer sound on the drums that we didn’t hear before, and upon further search we discovered the “error.”  The mic was an AKG C12 and the headphones were Sennheisers that the lead singer was using.  They were laying atop a grand piano and the piano was open.  Strings inside were vibrating and in principal it should have sounded like hell!  The song had been tracked with acoustic guitar and click; drums were added after a final vocal, thus the setup.  We changed nothing and used this mic’d track as part of the drum room sound.  Just amazingly ambient and just perfect for the song! Don’t be afraid to experiment with anything!  In these fun days where we record a lot of stuff at home, it’s easy to try new things in unorthodox ways.  The REAL point of my tip is to do and try anything. If it sounds good it’s right.
