Community Tip - Limit Recording Allocation To Keep Pro Tools Snappy

With the support of iLok, more tips & tricks from the community. Here is one from Ahmet Gökhan Coşkun a sound engineer from Turkey.

If you’re recording in a busy session with multiple simultaneous recording tracks Pro Tools may take a disturbing amount of time between pressed Record and it actually dropping into record.

To minimize this delay you can open Preferences, and in the Operations tab in Record part on the right side, there is an option called “Open-Ended Record Allocation”,

Check the Limit To option and set a reasonable time period according to the style of music that you’re recording (e.g. 30 minutes). This period may be really small amount of time if you’re recording short pieces or mainly overdub projects and help Pro Tools to punch in fluently.

Mike says - This is a useful tip on older systems that are struggling to work under the load. However it is less necessary for new more powerful systems.
