Lately I tend to duplicate low-frequency based instruments, such as kicks, bass guitar, and double bass two or sometimes even three times. Each duplicate will work on a certain band on the frequency spectrum.  

With a kick, for instance, I use the first track for the sub frequencies. I use a high-cut eq all the way down to somewhere between 60-100 Hz. The next track will be used for low-mids, and I will create the boundaries with a hi-pass (60-100 Hz) and a high cut (depends on the sound you’re after).

If’ you’re after a more snappy kick-sound, you can add another track for the click-sound that usually sits around 3,5 kHz.  If you have these 2 or 3 separate tracks, you can use different kinds of compression and dynamics for each individual “band”. For instance you can get a solid and consistent sound from the sub of the kick with some heavy compression, while you leave the character in the low-mids more lively.
