MacWorld Reporting New Mac Pro Rumours Including 2TB SSD

Macworld magazine are reporting two recent stories that a new Mac Pro will be announced next month and that it will have a 2 TB SSD drive in it.

They report a story from T-GAPP that the long overdue new Mac Pro will be announced in April 2013

Well our San Francisco Bay Area source has just informed T-GAAP.com that the time will be early April 2013. While we have been unable to corroborate this claim with another source, the timing does make a lot of sense.

  • This time is well in front of the WWDC13
  • April is the beginning of Apple’s 3rd Financial Quarter
  • It would be near the time of NAB

As to the story of a 2TB SSD drive they report a story from Bright Side Of The News who claim to have seen a 2TB SSD with Apple’s logo on it when visiting a factory in the Far East.

Seeing a 2TB Solid State Drive with an Apple logo on it opens very large ground for speculation. Given that we were not able to learn more about the parts in question, we have to leave it at that. But from the looks of it, the 2TB drives used industry standard 3.5” form factor, full height (just like your regular 3.5” spinning drive) and a SATA connector (not SAS or some proprietary port).

And for those you think this is all unfounded speculation Tim Cook has gone on record as promising something for this year. In an email in mid 2012, which Apple have confirmed came from Tim Cook, he said…

Franz,
Thanks for your email. Our Pro customers like you are really important to us. Although we didn’t have a chance to talk about a new Mac Pro at today’s event, don’t worry as we’re working on something really great for later next year. We also updated the current model today. We’ve been continuing to update Final Cut Pro X with revolutionary pro features like industry leading multi-cam support and we just updated Aperture with incredible new image adjustment features. We also announced a MacBook Pro with a Retina Display that is a great solution for many pros.
Tim

We shall see if these rumours come to pass and if you want to see more on the Mac Pro rumours then MacWorld has a page full of them with a range of images of what it might look like including the possibility of a rack mounted version.
