This tip involves the use of disabled tracks as a scratchpad for work on other active tracks. You can do this by turning off the voice assignment on the track(s) or by making the track(s) inactive in the Track Menu. This approach is useful in a number of situations, but in particular when working in film and television post production. Dialog editors use this approach to copy sequences of clips, roomtone, alternate takes, or processed or unprocessed original clips. especially when using rendered audiosuite plugins for noise reduction, effects eq (such as phone filters) or any other special processing. an editor can keep a copy of the original clip still in sync in the timeline, in the event the processing needs to be redone at a later point (such as in the re-recording process). These tracks are called x tracks and are commonly labeled x, y, z (or xx, yy, zz, etc).
